RUN FOR HARMONY
In response to heightened safety concerns amongst Tasmania’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities, on 15thDecember 2024, we launched our new project “RUN FOR HARMONY”, supported by the Tasmanian Government, Presented by Nepali Society of Tasmania and managed by Chiya Guff Run Club.
This project focuses on promoting social integration and community cohesion across Tasmania through fortnightly runs on Sunday around four councils: Hobart City Council, Kingborough Council, Clarence City Council, and Glenorchy City Council, for one year, with plans to extend beyond that.
The public consultation report on the Multicultural Action Plan 2024-26, conducted by the Multicultural Council of Tasmania (MCOT) and the Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC), highlights the common occurrence of racism in Tasmania. Contributing factors include a lack of community educational campaigns, opportunities for social integration, and media representations. It also reveals a poor sense of inclusion among CALD groups. Similarly, the Annual Report 2022-23 of Equal Opportunity Tasmania shows that out of 305 allegations of discrimination, 33 (10.8%) were race related.
This project is our response to these reports, aiming to minimize safety concerns among Tasmania’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities by bringing them together and building a more inclusive and harmonious Tasmania. As the name ‘Run For Harmony’ suggests, the main theme of this project is to unite the multicultural Tasmanian community through fortnightly themed runs and have open conversations about issues, challenges, and opportunities to make a positive impact on this multicultural island. This platform allows people to share their stories, network with others, and gain valuable insights for a better life in Tasmania.
This project also supports the mental health of victims of anti-social behaviours and provides a platform for socially isolated people to come together, share their experiences, or simply make new friends and connect with the community.
‘Run For Harmony’ aims to create a lasting impact by fostering ongoing relationships and community engagement. Future events will build on the success of the initial series, with continued support from community partners and stakeholders. Supporting ‘Run for Harmony’ is an investment in a more inclusive, cohesive, and resilient community.
